CHAPTER 372 - STATE OF DELAWARE - EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, pursuant to the provisions of Public Resolution 67, approved May 3, 1940, the President of the United States has proclaimed the third Sunday in May as "I Am An American ' Day" and urges that the day be appropriately observed in recognition of those who have attained the status of citizenship; and
WHEREAS, the observance of this day will serve to remind those new citizens who are now charged with the duties and responsibilities of citizenship of their obligation to promote the interests and welfare of our Republic and to defend it from all enemies domestic and foreign; and
WHEREAS, our Nation is accordingly enriched each year by the addition of new citizens, both native and those who become naturalized,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Walter W. Bacon, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby proclaim and set apart Sunday, May 20, 1944, as
"I AM AN AMERICAN DAY"
as a day to pay honor to American citizenship by according special recognition to those citizens who have attained their majority or who have become naturalized during the past year and urge our people, our churches and all our patriotic and civic organizations to hold appropriate exercises for the purpose of enabling our native born and naturalized citizens more fully to understand the high privileges and great responsibilities of citizenship in our country.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, Walter W. Bacon, Governor of the State of Delaware, have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the said State to be hereunto affixed, at Dover, this second day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and forty-four and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and sixty-eighth.
