Delaware General Assembly

CHAPTER 879

STATE OF DELAWARE

EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT

DOVER

PROCLAMATION

Whereas, the Continental Congress, on June 14 , 1777 , officially adopted a banner of thirteen alternate stripes of red and white and a field of blue with one star for each state to be our national emblem; and

Whereas, ever since that date the Stars and Stripes has served as a symbol of our unity and determination to remain free and as a symbol of hope to people the world over; and

Whereas, tradition has it that this Fl a g wa s first unfurled in land battle at Cooch's Bridge, Delaware, i n early S e ptember 1777, and in succeeding years thousands of Delawareans ha v e fought, and many peri s hed , to keep this flag flying high; and

Whereas, since December 7, 1787 the first star of this emblem represents Delaware's position as The First State; and

Whereas, the a nnual celebration of National Fl a g Week affords us an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the assurance that our Flag will w a ve forever a s the symbol of "one Nation, under God, indivisible, w i t h libert y a nd justice for all."

Now, therefore, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, do hereby proclaim Sunday, June 14, 1970 as

NATIONAL FLAG DAY

and the week of June 14-20, 1970 as

NATIONAL FLAG WEEK

in Delaware, and urge all residents of The First State to properly display the American Flag daily. This display along with participation in appropriate ceremonies gives visible evidence of our loyalty to this Nation and all that "Old Glory" so proudly represents.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I, Russell W. Peterson, Governor of the State of Delaware, have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the said State to be hereunto affixed at Dover this 1st day of June in the year of our Lord, one thou s and nine hundred and seventy, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the one hundred and ninet y- fourth.
