Whereas, during 
the past 
decade the abuse 
of 
drugs 
has 
grown from a 
local 
police problem to a grave threat to the health and 
safety 
of millions of 
Americans; 
and Whereas, statistics 
tell but part of 
the story of tragedy incurred by drug use and abuse;

effects of drugs 
spread 
far beyond the 
lives 
of the victims themselves; and Whereas, the 
number 
of drug 
users, 
arrests, and deaths are 
increa
s
in
g wit
hin our State despite the enforcement 
of 
stringent drug 
laws; and 
Whereas, 
public education 
is 
the 
most fea
sib
le 
method by which 
s
uch 
problems and methods 
of 
their prevention can be brought to the attention 
of 
each 
and 
every 
Delawarean; 
Now, 
therefo
re, I, Russell W. Peterson, 
Governor of 
the 
State of 
Delaware

do hereby proclaim 
the 
week 
of May 24-30,

DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION WEEK
in Delaware, and 
urge 
the 
public 
and private sectors to combine their re

ources and efforts to establish meaningful programs for the promotion of 
drug 
abuse prevention among young people. Further, 
I urge 
the cooperation 
in 
this 
venture of 
all others whose activities interrelate with young 
people, 
and in particular, I 
ask the 
cooperation 
of 
the communications 
media 
who 
can 
provide invaluable assistance,
