HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 30

ACKNOWLEDGING JUNE 2021 AS LGBTQ+ PRIDE MONTH IN DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, June 2021 marks the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall riots, when members of the LGBTQ+ community courageously stood up against the discrimination and violence perpetrated upon them based on their sexual orientations and gender identities; and

WHEREAS, the riots sparked the modern American LGBTQ+ civil rights movement; and

WHEREAS, the riots have inspired members of the LGBTQ+ community, led to the formation of countless organizations, and resulted in the positive transformation of our society and laws regarding LGBTQ+ equality, not just in America but around the world; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ Delawareans are part of the rich diversity of our state of neighbors; and

WHEREAS, in Delaware, we have made great strides in protecting equal rights for LGBTQ+ Delawareans and in ensuring that all Delawareans feel at home in our great state; and

WHEREAS, even as the LGBTQ+ community celebrates our many victories, we know that the battle for equality is perennial; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ youth have much higher rates of homelessness, mental health and substance abuse issues, self-harm, and suicide than their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts; and

WHEREAS, in the LGBTQ+ community, people of color face additional intersectional daily challenges; and

WHEREAS, in the LGBTQ+ community, elderly individuals often face unique and difficult circumstances; and

WHEREAS, the LGBTQ+ community acknowledges and thanks its allies; and

WHEREAS, we honor Senator Karen Peterson as the first openly LGBTQ+ member to serve in the Delaware General Assembly; and

WHEREAS, in November 2020, Delaware elected its first-ever openly LGBTQ+ members of the General Assembly, representing a diverse cross-section of the community; and

WHEREAS, every June, communities across the United States and around the world come together to celebrate LGBTQ+ lives; and

WHEREAS, we recommit to guaranteeing equality and fairness for all LGBTQ+ Delawareans.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of the 151st General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that the state of Delaware acknowledges the month of June 2021 as LGBTQ+ Pride Month.
